Jennie Johnston was born in Kilmarnock on 9th May 1882. She followed her husband William (Billy) Adamson to the north of England in search of work. An activist in the trade union movement and the Labour Party he had difficulty securing employment. Jennie worked as a dressmaker, in a factory and as a school teacher to support their four children. The family moved to London on Billy being elected MP for Cannock. Jennie worked tirelessly in the Labour Party heading its national executive council. Elected MP for Dartford in 1938, she championed better conditions for working wives, equal pay equal opportunities for women. She died in Bromley on 15th April 1962. |
