Born and brought up up in Edinburgh, Hayden was educated at George Watson’s College following which, in 1956, he entered the Medical School at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 1962.
Following pre-Registration training in Medicine and Surgery in the West Middlesex Hospital he obtained his Diploma in Anaesthetics then spent six months in Canada as a locum in General Practice.
He joined the Ladywell East Medical Centre in Corstorphine, Edinburgh. In 30 years there he earned a reputation as a conscientious and caring GP who thoroughly enjoyed his work, was popular and much appreciated by his patients. He provided medical cover for Hearts Football Club and in Saughton Jail.
On retiring he worked with the Benefits Agency and carried out medicals for Army Recruitment at Colinton Barracks.
But mostly he was able to give more time to friends and the pursuits he enjoyed with them.
A Munroist, his last climb of the 282 was Sgurr Nam Kerreran in 2001. He enjoyed enthusiastic golf at the Bruntsfield Golf Club in Edinburgh. With an Irish and Shetland background he was a good storyteller. Congenial in company he was also quiet, thoughtful, empathetic, humble.
He leaves his widow, Colette, and son Paul.
