Brief Profile

Following the death by suicide of her father who had been gassed in the war the family moved to London where Joan’s talent was spotted by her art teacher. She entered Glasgow School of Art in 1939 where she studied under Hugh Adam Crawford. In 1947 she was tutored at a summer school by James Cowie.

In her earlier work, Joan used a variety of mediums to realistically portray the lives of the Glasgow tenement children living near her studio. In 1950 she began painting in Catterline, Kincardineshire among the fishing community. Working in all weathers on large dramatic seascapes she used a pram for her easel and paints.

Her talent was recognised in Scotland in her lifetime. Joan became an Associate in the Royal Scottish Academy in 1955 and elected RSA in 1963

Before her early death she was being recognised internationally and since her death her reputation has grown enormously.
