Sylvia Wishart, an Orcadian who drew much of her inspiration from the islands, made a major contribution to Scottish artistic life in the second half of the 20th century. In Stromness Academy she was encouraged to a career in art. She studied and later lectured, in painting and drawing ,at Gray’s School of Art. Collaborating with George Mackay Brown she provided the drawings for his Orkney Tapestry. Elected to the RSA in 1993 she was equally proud of her contribution, as a trustee and adviser, to the Pier Arts Centre in her hometown of Stromness. |
